An independent community of knowledge and expertise in support of development
The Sudan Policy Advisory Group is an independent non-profit association working in research, knowledge, strategic planning, capacity development, technical assistance, exchange of expertise and partnership-building, and seeks to contribute to Sudan’s development priorities.
SPAG operates as a community of knowledge and expertise, bringing together specialists, researchers and practitioners from Sudan and around the world. We draw on this expertise to produce knowledge, carry out research and public policy analysis, strengthen human and institutional capacity, support learning and the exchange of experience, and develop practical initiatives and tools that contribute to Sudan’s development priorities.
The Group began in August 2022 as a volunteer initiative launched by a group of Sudanese academics and experts.
Today SPAG works through a network of more than 80 experts and contributors in about 20 countries. They are organised in sectoral working groups and project teams, and combine academic expertise with professional practice in fields such as economics, public administration, health, education, energy, infrastructure and technology.
Our work includes preparing research, studies and policy papers; organising learning programmes and workshops; providing advice and technical assistance; facilitating dialogue and the exchange of expertise among institutions, experts and partners; and making the knowledge and evidence we produce available to those working on Sudan’s development priorities.
We work independently and professionally, and we judge the value of our work by how useful it is in practice to the institutions and communities we work with.
What we believe
We believe that recovery and sustainable development in Sudan require a long-term perspective that goes beyond responding to immediate needs.
This calls for the ability to plan ahead, identify development priorities, strengthen institutions and turn goals into practical programmes. SPAG therefore combines research and public policy analysis, technical advice, capacity development and knowledge exchange, as a contribution to practical, evidence-based solutions that take account of local context.
How we workSudan and the region
Sudan remains our primary focus. We also seek to exchange experience and cooperate with countries in the region, particularly in the areas of recovery and development.
We connect Sudanese knowledge and expertise with experts, institutions and partners at regional and international levels, and with Sudanese professionals abroad.
Our approach
Our approach rests on independence, integrity, collaboration and inclusion. We encourage open consultation, responsible professional practice and effective partnership among public institutions, civil society, experts and development partners.
We believe the most sustainable solutions draw on a diversity of expertise and grow out of local needs and priorities.
Capacity development
Capacity development is central to our work. Through training, leadership development, and technical and institutional support, we seek to strengthen the capacities of individuals and institutions working in development and public service.
